LC0001 Grits and Gravy Special Edition
LC0001 Grits and Gravy Special Edition | After spending several months working hard on the very complicated #10 acoustic, I decided to do something for fun. It all started with the question, "Could I build an electric guitar in a weekend with mostly leftover parts?" But then the question became, "What would a custom built electric for Larry Chicken be?" It's all downhill from there.
This project was a very strange mix of influences. It started with my fascination with Rick Toone's "Skele" style guitars which are real "out of the box" designs:
Now take that high end concept and add (or subtract) from that a video I saw of a guy who makes instruments out of almost anything, in this case a piece of old hollow core door! And so that leads me back to, "let me see if I can build an electric out of wood and parts that I have in my leftovers."Now add the special ingredient: Larry Chicken (aka Scott Rogers) special sauce.
Basically, this special "sauce" contains a hint of the '70's, a big dose of low-tech, essence of pawn shop, all held together by grease, the spirit of Little Debbie, and an infusion of chocolate and peanut butter.
The whole guitar is build around a single Honduran mahogany neck blank that extends 90% of the way through the body and was routed for the pickup cavities. The actual neck portion has a mahogany bound rosewood fretboard with rosewood head and back veneers. The body of guitar is four pieces of basswood shaped and held together by glue and sheet rock screws.
The whole key to the guitar is the proprietary electronics which allow you to choose between "grits" or "gravy" tones for each of the pickups.
I wanted this guitar to look like it was built in and from parts of a barn sometime in the late 40s in an unknown location in MS. In the end, it's all about making something unique for a long-time friend and brother for the sheer joy of it all.
